In September 1975, Dame Whina Cooper at the age of 80 led the nationally recognised Māori Land Hikoi (march) which started from Te Hapua to the Wellington Parliament building in October 1975.

Community

The community is rich in history and tradition while possessing a strong determination to be resourceful and self sufficient. This is evident as they have had a marked increase in new homes and operate marine farms and fishing ventures.
